For Canadian women screen directors the WIDC Short Works Award is designed to provide up to three Canadian women directors with a tailored development offering with the goal of creating one short fiction film work (2-3 minutes maximum), suitable as a stand-alone piece for festival screenings; a teaser; or a tool for funding and promotional purposes for a longer work (e.g. feature film or web series). TELUS will have non-exclusive rights to distribution after the film’s festival run. This is an adjudicated offering and applicants are requested to make a case to be selected by completing and submitting by the deadline. Applications are especially encouraged from residents of the Nicola-Thompson region who have already directed two short films.

About the program: Successful applicants will have the opportunity to attend master classes and one-to-one sessions, facilitated by WIDC Producer, Carol Whiteman, and sessions with a Mentor Director (TBA). The classes will be tailored to advance the recipients’ careers and specifically offer story consultation for their proposed projects. The winning project will be fast-tracked to production and advanced through meetings about concept, pre-production, then into production and post. Following the face-to-face portion of the lab, each director will work with WIDC Producer to create a marketing and distribution plan. We are looking for passionate filmmakers who want to fully utilize this opportunity.
LAB & PRODUCTION SCHEDULE *

September 26th, 27th & 28th, 2018 – Masterclasses
- Day 1: (5:30pm -7:30pm) – Intros and discussion on story-telling and leadership presented by Carol Whiteman, WIDC Producer
- Day 2: (9am-5pm) – Master class on short film form tailored to participants’ needs. After sharing their story-editing assignments and story take-aways with Mentors, the three filmmakers will review casting options from among local ACTRA actors. The short films are cast for workshopping purposes.
- Day 3: (9am-5pm) –During a round table session, an acting ensemble of up to 6 ACTRA actors do a read-through of the scripts, offering feedback to the filmmakers. Following the read-through of all three scripts, the filmmakers each meet one to one with the Award producers to discuss each film’s potential to be fast-tracked into production.
- At the end of the day, one director and her short film is green-lit to go into production. The two runners-up will receive an additional 3 hours of coaching and story-editing and will be invited to fill crew positions on the winning director’s film. In the spirit of creating community, each director is encouraged to offer support to the other directors on their films.
Beginning October 1st – Prep / Further Development
- The award winner meets with production and post production teams to plan the one-day shoot, including discussion of story concept, locations, art department, post production, music composition needs.
- The two runner up finalists meet with WIDC producer to continue development on their short works project.
By October 12th – Production
- A one-day 8-hour shoot in one location with cast and crew.
By October 19th – Picture Post
- Director works with a picture editor to achieve a lock picture. Up to 20 hours includes time for notes from producers.
By October 22nd – Audio Post / Colour correct
- Director works with a sound designer to achieve audio mix; DOP for colour correct. Up to 20 hours includes time for notes from producers.
Wrap up by October 31st
- Private screening of finished film.
- Together with WIDC Producer, the three SWA Directors review program take-aways and next steps.
- The three SWA Directors meet one-to-one with WIDC Producer via Skype for up to 3-hour sessions to review goals, marketing and distribution plans and further career strategic planning.
